- 40% less likely to develop Alzheimers
- Treat depression as effectively as Prozac or behavioral therapy
What if this treatment was available to everyone for free and with little to no potential side effects for most people? Wouldn’t everybody use it? You would think so, but for some reason we are not. The treatment is simple, it is regular physical activity. Even with all the known benefits of physical activity, over half of US adults are not meeting activity recommendations. Incorporating physical activity into your lifestyle is one of the most important decisions you can make for your overall health. All it takes is 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercises each week (that’s only 30 minutes, 5 days per week). This includes activities such as a brisk walk, slow bike ride, or water aerobics. Adding in 2 days per week of strength training can have the additional benefit of increasing bone strength and muscle fitness. If you have a known history of significant heart disease or if you have chest pain with exertion, you should consult with your primary care physician or cardiologist prior to starting a new exercise program.
